Forty Seven Years Of Marriage And She Still Gets Me Excited

Author : Donald Yartes

Relationship or Marriage?
I have heard every plausible excuse under the sun for ending a relationship. That’s what marriage is all about, isn’t it? How many times have you heard, “I just ended a relationship”? Or, “I was in a bad relationship” well I have news for you, dubby, .there are no perfect relationships. Every relationship is riddled with conflict and controversy. Don’t get me wrong, many relationships also have love, understanding, patience and most of all, respect and trust. But in every relationship you enter into it’s up to you to make it work. That’s right, your relationship your experience and your responsibility. If you don’t want responsibility, don’t have relationships and for sure, don’t get married.

I have been married for, lets see, about forty seven years now. Yep, we got married back in nineteen sixty one. Dang, how time flies. From the first time I met her I knew she was the one. I was mesmerized from the start. But, big problem, we are completely incompatible. That’s right, we don’t see eye to eye on anything. I love to fish, she hates fishing and not only that, she hates fish in general and I give up fishing. When we got married, I loved to race, well, I sold my hot rod in the first year. Why, she was more important, she was my mate for life. Everything else is in passing, to satisfy a desire but her, she is an extension of me.

Do Kids make Marriage better?
We have three kids, two boys and a girl. From day one of the first child, I took the back seat position and have been there every sense. That’s all right, I did what I had to do, and she did likewise. We moved from California to New Hampshire in seventy two and started a new life. We live there for seven years. I believe being completely dependent on each other, made us bond closer. We met adversity and challenges together and carved our little bit of life together.

We moved to Northern California, and started a whole new life. New friends, environment, jobs, just like New Hampshire, every time monotony set in, we changed the surroundings. Five years passed, the kids were getting big and then, we moved to San Diego.

I started a cleaning business and the wife went to work at a local hospital. New challenges, new friends, new environment. Each move brought us closer together. I wouldn’t suggest to anyone, that moving every few years is the answer to a long lasting marriage. There is a lot to be said for stability in a marriage also. Staying in one place, working at one job, and building a healthy financial portfolio. I often wonder, what if, you know what if we had stayed in one place? What if we had not changed jobs? The many unanswered what ifs that could have been. Now we are in Tennessee and living out the remainder years together. I see people who have no one and I feel sorry for them. Everyone needs someone to make their lives complete.

Would it have made a difference?
Chances are, we would not have stayed together. We didn’t have any common ground or interest and as we gained wealth, we would have moved in separate directions. If it take glue to bond a marriage, then it first must have love, second, trust, third, challenge. A marriage must be challenged to stay healthy. If it isn’t, it will turn stale and stagnate. Then one or the other will look for challenge, with something or someone else. Call it excitement, or renewal, but the idea of change is only a heart beat away.

Relationships must be grounded in something. Be it love, which is questionable now days, faith or common interest, there must be some attraction which both parties care for. That’s why so many marriages end after the children have moved away. The children was the common bond, the glue that held the marriage together. I am not saying you should get a hobby, in my wife and my case, we don’t have any thing we both like to do.

If You Get involve in living life
Do things together, get involved in Church, work to instill good values and morals in your children. Stop thinking of I and think of we. We in everything you do, if you are purchasing something or watching TV, think is it best for us. When you got married you don’t exist any more, you are now we in everything you do. If you think you have to have your space or your freedom, forget it. Don’t get married in the first place. Being married is a partnership, bonding and most of all blending of personalities to become one with each other. If you are in it for the love making, forget it.

Look for healthy challenges and depend on each other for support. There is nothing new under the sun and your difficulties and hardships are not unique or only happening to you. It’s how you handle the challenge that is a testament to your character.

You can cut and run anytime, but to stay the course takes moxie. There is also nothing that can’t be worked out. At times you may not like each other, so what, I have worked with a lot of people I didn’t like but I didn’t quit. There are times I don’t like my wife but there is never a time I don’t love her.

You’ll Stay together for a lifetime
Be tolerant, faithful, trusting and caring. You will not only enjoy marriage more but you will also enjoy being around yourself more. Think about it before you commit. When you do, commit all the way or don’t do it at all.

Happy Trails
