Diagnosing Social Anxiety In Children

Author : Marco Gonzaga
It is common among children to have occasional mood swings, tantrums, and down moments. These are actually essential in their part of moving onto the adolescent stage. However, when these become frequent, it is possible that a child may be suffering from social anxiety.

It is not easy to say that a child is indeed suffering from social anxiety. Full attention and support of the parents are a must in order to identify the causes that trigger such abnormal social behavior. The help of a professional may also be necessary in diagnosing and treating social anxiety condition.

The following is a list on how to determine if a child is experiencing social anxiety problems:

Monitor the child's behavior.
It is typical for kids to be shy at situations wherein he or she moved into a new city or is transferred to a new school. This behavior, however, generally lasts for about six months only. Hence, if a kid is still shy and withdrawn after that duration, he or she may be suffering from depression.

Gently ask questions.
If a parent suspects that his child may be suffering from anxiety, spending time with the kid is very important. The most common complaint among depressed kids is that they do not want to go to school for some reason. The parent should then ask the child for the reason why in such a way that the child is not pressured. A child may not want to go to school because he or she:

- is being picked on by other kids
- does not like his or her teacher
- exhibits excessive shyness

Talk to the child.
Frequently talking with the child to know what he is thinking is a good move for the parents in order to determine if their children is suffering from social anxiety. It is natural for children to have a hard time expressing what they think and feel. Hence, it is important for parents to keep an open communication with their children.

Notice if the child exhibits fear or shyness when around other children.
Another sign of social anxiety is when a child shows signs of shyness and fear whenever he or she is around other children. If a parent notices that his kid is always avoiding interaction with other people, it is possible that he or she may be experiencing social anxiety.

Once parents' suspicions are answered by the points explained above, they should immediately take their children to a doctor for consultation to confirm condition. Also, parents should put on their full support and attention in order to help their children in coping with anxiety.

Basically, what children suffering from social anxiety need are support, love, and attention by people around them, most especially their parents. Parents should always be around to reassure their children that they are loved and cared for. If parents can do these, their children experiencing social anxiety will be able to get over or smoothly cope with his or her anxieties and fears.
